The base was named after John Bell Hood, who gained glory during the Civil War as the leader of the famous Hood’s Texas Brigade. It is also known as “The Great Place” because of the high standards it maintains. The base was built during World War II because tank destroyers were developed and there was a need for a wide-open space for testing and training. By the end of 1942 there were more than 40,000 troops living there, and by 1943 the number of the troops had grown to 95,000. Probably the most famous person to graduate from Fort Hood was Elvis Presley, who arrived there in 1958.
