It recovered in the 1880’s and began to flourish once more. Between 1877 and 1915 the railroads, hospitals and colleges were built, which made the county even more economically stable. Bell County is the home of the first female Governor of Texas, Miriam A. Ferguson. In 1867, Martha McWhirter formed the first movement for women in the form of a shelter for those who were in abusive relationships. The county grew rapidly, and it comes as no surprise that it is one of the most desirable places to live in Texas.

Military Presence

Militarydefenseattorneys_4570Bell County is home to Fort Hood, one of the largest military installations with the capacity for 50, 000 troops. The Fort Hood base was built in 1942 and is located in Killeen, Bell County, 60 miles north of Austin, the capital of Texas. The base was named after John Bell Hood, who gained glory during the Civil War as the leader of the famous Hood’s Texas Brigade. It is also known as “The Great Place” because of the high standards it maintains. The base was built during World War II because tank destroyers were developed and there was a need for a wide-open space for testing and training. By the end of 1942 there were more than 40,000 troops living there, and by 1943 the number of the troops had grown to 95,000. Probably the most famous person to graduate from Fort Hood was Elvis Presley, who arrived there in 1958. He got the same treatment as any other cadet in the camp, only he also got 3-4 bags a mail each day. Ever since the 1970’s, the Fort Hood military base has played a significant role in training, testing and developing new equipment and tactics.
