Quantico, VA

Militarydefenseattorneys_4545The town of Quantico is located in Prince William County in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Although it used to be a bustling city, according to the latest US Census, it now has a population of only 480 people. Since it’s so small, there are no large businesses in the area, apart from the famous Quantico military base. The Mayor of the town, Kevin Brown, jokes that they’re all in the business of doing either haircuts or hamburgers. This is not far from the truth, since Quantico has nine barbershops on less than 500 inhabitants. Probably the biggest reason why the town became so underpopulated are the changes that have happened in the transportation network.

Geography

The city of Quantico occupies a total area of 0.1 square miles, none of which is covered in water. Its borders are marked on three sides by the military base Quantico, and the Potomac River on the remaining side. To the north of the city lies the mouth of the so-called Quantico Creek. The elevation of the area is approximately 39 feet. When it comes to weather, the city of Quantico falls under the category of humid subtropical climates. This means that it has fairly mild and short winters with almost no snowfall, and long, hot summers with plenty of rain and thunderstorms.

History

The name of the city of Quantico derives from the Indian word for “by the large stream”, which means that the area had been inhabited by Native Americans before any Europeans came ashore. It was in 1654, however, that the first strips of Quantico land were sold to the English. Upon its establishment, the town was first named Carborough, but the name was changed several times, so Quantico is a town that went by Evansport and Potomac as well. During the colonial era, two different plantations were built near the newly-found settlement, namely, Dipple and Berea. The troops that fought in the Revolutionary War used the town’s road quite often, but the real fighting didn’t reach it until 1814, when the British anchored a large number of their ships anchored along its coast. In 1917, some of the land was bought by the US Army and a new military base was established on the outskirts of Quantico. Ever since then, the town has been greatly influenced by the military presence.

Industry

Militarydefenseattorneys_4550Since the population is less than 500 and there are no large businesses in the area, it could be said that the city of Quantico has no developed industry. There are nine barbershops and a couple of dry cleaning businesses within the city grounds, and the Mayor himself says that the town’s activities could be reduced to doing haircuts, making hamburgers and producing clothes hangers. Undoubtedly the largest employer in the area is the Quantico military base, which has significantly shaped the local economy.

Military Presence

Marine Corps Base Quantico is located just outside the borders of the city of Quantico. It was established in 1917, when it was just a row of barracks, but over time it developed into what is now the most famous US military base. It is known as the Crossroads of the Marine Corps because its main purpose is to provide training for its cadets. In 2010, it was estimated that the base employs over 12,000 people, both civilian and military personnel. The base is also home to a research center that provides the military with improved equipment, especially when it comes to telecommunication. Apart from the Corps’ Combat Development Command, Quantico hosts the Officer Candidates School, as well as a military prison known as the Marine Corps Brig.
