Background of Fort Myer, VA

Fort Myers, Virginia, was used as an army facility from its beginnings during the Civil War until today. It housed several companies and regiments, including the 3rd United States. Infantry Regiment, Old Guard, United States Army Band, and Pershing’s headquarters and garrison. Fort Myers today supports military facilities in the D.C. Washington region in several capacities, including Virginia, Crystal City, the Pentagon, and the District of Columbia.

Founded during the American Civil War as Fort Cass and Fort Whipple, Fort Myers merged with the neighboring Henderson Hall Marine Corps facility in 2005 and is now named after it. Fort Myer’s former name was used for the US Army post at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington County, Virginia, on the Potomac River from Washington, DC.

The first quarter of Fort Myers was built in 1908 as the garrison quarters where the US Army Chief of Staff served when Major General J. Franklin Bell took residence. Initially completed in 1899, Quarters One was the residence of the Army’s senior uniformed officers and served as the US Army Chief of Staff headquarters until 1908.

The oldest infantry unit, the 3rd United States, the Infantry Old Guard, was reactivated in 1948 and assigned to Fort Myers and Fort Lesley J. McNair as official ceremonial units and security forces for the Washington area. The Myers-Henderson Hall Joint Base, which includes Fort Myers for the Army and Henderson Hall for the Marine Corps, both in Arlington, VA, and Fort McNair in Washington, DC, were merged in October 2009 as a result of the reorganization and closure of the base in 2005 (BRAC). The command included both bases due to a BRAC initiative in 2005, with Henderson combining Hall’s installation management functions with those of Fort Myers in a military community command known as Joint Command.

Fort Whipple was an important post-confederate military force during the Civil War because of its altitude. Early in his career with BG Albert J. Myers, he served as commander of the post and was appointed Chief Signal Officer of the Army in 1866. He held a position until he died in 1880. The post was renamed in his honor to clear up the confusion caused by a second Fort Whipple in Arizona. Fort Myers later became one of the most important Signal Corps positions in the United States, a showcase for Army cavalry and site of the first flight of an Air Force installation.

Between 1887 and 1949, Fort Myers housed up to 1,500 horses at any one time, and the Army’s Cavalry became an important part of Washington’s official social life. The Fort Myers area, occupied by the Andrew Rader Health Clinic and the Commissariat, was a trench system and a troop training area where French officers taught American soldiers about trench warfare.

The United States government purchased the land occupied by Fort Myers. It began to use it as a burial ground for the dead of the Union Army (see Arlington National Cemetery), to house freed slaves and their villages [5], and for military purposes such as the civil war and the defense of Washington (see Washington, DC during the American Civil War ). General George S. Patton Jr. was stationed four times at Fort Myers, beginning during World War I with the Charity Society of Circus. In late 2001 in response to the September September 11 attacks at Fort Myers.
