Dutch Military Installations and Military History

The Dutch Royal Air Force operated Hawker Typhoon and Tempest aircraft from Volkel Air Base until the Germans seized it in 1944. The Royal Navy used the airfield until late, when the Royals took control of the base. In early 1945, the French ace Pierre Clostermann, flight commander of the 122nd Wing, wrote about operations at Volkel. The dummy bombs, which simulate B61, were used to train pilots to fly an F-16 in the dark. In addition, these dummy bombs are used to train the Dutch to fly in a hostile environment.
