Dutch Military Installations and Military History

The Dutch Royal Air Force operated Hawker Typhoon and Tempest aircraft from Volkel Air Base until the Germans seized it in 1944. The Royal Navy used the airfield until late, when the Royals took control of the base. In early 1945, the French ace Pierre Clostermann, flight commander of the 122nd Wing, wrote about operations at Volkel. A report by the NATO Defense Ministers Committee in 1949 noted that the Dutch military was storing around 150 American B61 bombers at Volkel.

The US air force currently has no nuclear weapons, and they are waiting for the Joint Strike Fighter to be delivered to the Dutch air force. As of 2008, the Air Force believed that 22 B61 nuclear bombs were stored at Volkel. The Dutch F-16AMs are also capable of carrying BDU-38 dummy bombs. There are no plans to deploy any of these aircraft to the European Union, although they can carry dummy bombs.

The Dutch government never acknowledges that the US military has nuclear weapons. However, United States diplomatic cables and former air force pilot Steve Netto have revealed that the Netherlands was home to fifty B28 nuclear bombs during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The dummy bombs, which simulate B61, were used to train pilots to fly an F-16 in the dark. In addition, these dummy bombs are used to train the Dutch to fly in a hostile environment.

The Netherlands Air Force maintains two F-16 Fighting Falcon squadrons and two other squadrons. These aircraft are used to train new aircraft, and the US Army has a base at Volkel for their training and exercises. The base also has a trauma helicopter operated by ANWB Medical Air Assistance and an ANG 152d Tactical Control Group dispersed throughout the area. In September 2012, the Dutch military officially closed the Volkel Air Base.
