Spokane, WA
Located in Spokane County in the state of Washington, the city of Spokane is the seat of the county that was named after it. While in the past it was a fur trading center, today it boasts of being the most culturally diversified city in the whole of eastern Washington, as well as its financial center. The name Spokane derives from the Native American word for “children of the sun”, and for a good reason, since the city has an average of 250 sunny days during the course of a single year. The climate being mild and the surrounding nature beautiful, Spokane is truly a pleasant place to live.
Geography
The city grounds are located on the Spokane River. To the west there lie the Rocky Mountain foothills, and to the north there is the Canadian border, only 92 miles from the city. The city of Seattle is situated approximately 280 miles to the west of Spokane. According to the US Census that was conducted in 2010, the city has a population of just over 208,000 people, which makes it the second most populated city in the state of Washington, as well as the 102nd in the whole of the US. The elevation of the area was estimated to be around 1,800 feet above sea level. The highest elevation is on the spot near the Hillyard community. The city of Spokane is a part of the region called Inland Northwest, which consists of northwestern Montana, eastern Washington, northeastern Idaho and northeastern Oregon.
History
The first inhabitants of the area where now lies the city of Spokane were the Native American Spokane tribe. They had been living there for centuries before the first European settlers arrived. It was in the early 19th century that the first fur trappers were sent to scout the area and report back to the Northwest Fur Company. The trappers eventually set up in the Colville River valley, and that was the beginning of the city of Spokane. It was in 1810 that the first post was established on the Spokane River, and the area was soon crowded with fur trappers and traders, as well as their families. The city of Spokane continued to grow up until 1889, when the Great Fire occurred, and the whole place got burned down. The late 20th century was also a difficult period for the town, but is starting to recuperate, mostly thanks to the economic diversification.
Industry
The city of Spokane was located in the middle of various farming and mining areas, which is why it soon became a major rail and shipping center. Nowadays, the city is much more diversified when it comes to industry. Some of the major fields include printing and publishing, wood and food processing, computer equipment, metal fabrication and refining, and transportation equipment. There are several large companies with headquarters in the city of Spokane: Gold Reserve, Potlatch Corporation and Fortune 1000. Gold Reserve is a company that is in the business of gold mining, and Potlatch is a real estate investment trust.
Military Presence
The Fairchild Air Force Base is a military installation located near the city of Spokane, approximately 12 miles to the southwest. It is home to the 92nd Air Refueling Wing, which is a unit the main purpose of which is to provide air refueling. These are all support missions necessary for the proper functioning of the US Air Force. The base was established in 1942, and named after General Muir Fairchild, who was a celebrated aviator during World War I, as well as the US Air Force Vice Chief of Staff.
