Military History: RAFO Thumrait, Oman
The 405th Air Expeditionary Wing will be the first air unit to arrive at RAFO Thumrait. The city is on the main road that links Dhofar to the rest of Oman and is home to approximately 20,000 people. The wing, part of the United States Air Force, will be headquartered at Thumrait AB. It will be manned by a team of 737s and is equipped with an air refueling aircraft.
The base was originally an oil depot but hosted the Royal Air Force. RAFO Thumrait is one of the country’s three Air Force pre-positioning sites. It has a population of 26,000 and is the largest military installation in the Sultanate. During the Gulf War, Oman signed an access agreement with the United States in 1981. In return, the country has remained one of the strongest supporters of US presence.
The RAFO has five F-16s from the No. 18 Squadron. The IAF has five MiG-29s and one E-3D Sentry AEW1 used in the exercise. During the four-day exercise, the aircrews were exposed to various missions and best practices in operational procedures. They also practiced air to ground bombing and maritime strike roles.
On 17 April 1996, the US Air Force sent the 16th Special Operations Wing to RAFO Thumrait. The unit was responsible for air and ground attack missions and was tasked with supervising the training of Omani pilots. On the same day, the 823rd’ Red Horse’ Squadron and the 823rd’ Pink Panther’ were based at the base.
RAFO Thumrait was created in 1952 as an oil depot for the Indian Air Force. During the Gulf War, RAFO Thumrait was used by allied and Omani Air Forces. The British military also used it. The RAFO has a close relationship with the Indian government, and many of its operations are supported by a local government. Therefore, it is important to understand that the role of a RAFO is very important in the country.
RAFO Thumrait Air Base is a major location for Allied and US air forces. It is a modern, large base that provides an excellent platform for Allied and US forces to conduct combat operations. The RAFO Thumrait AB also served as a training facility during the war. The facility is located on a mountain, but it is not too far from the Muscat International Airport.

The Oman Air Force has expanded its fast jet force and deployed the F-16 Fighting Falcons. The first of these aircraft was delivered in 2005/2006, and a total of twenty-four F-16s, eight single-seat F-16Cs, and four two-seat F-16Ds were sent to Oman. This new fleet of fighter jets is a vital component of Oman’s armed forces.

The UAE, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia have all been close to Oman since joining the United States in 1981. Moreover, the Sultanate has strengthened ties with its neighbors by signing an access agreement with the United States in 1980.
Oman Air Force bases were established in Muscat and Al-Hasib. The SOAF was headquartered at Al-Hasib, while the US Air Force’s headquarters is in Muscat. In 2002, the SOAF also acquired several US helicopters. During the Dhofar Revolution, the air force was able to control drones and armed forces in Afghanistan. Today, the United States military has many bases in the Sultanate.
The UAE has several Oman Military Air Force bases staffed by US forces. The Omani Air Force also has bases in Dubai and Muscat. Currently, the Oman Air Force maintains ten aircraft at these locations. Some of the largest of these are manned and unmanned. Aside from the military aircraft, the Oman Air Force has other aircraft types that the USAF does not use.
The Tumrit Air Base is the largest in Oman. The Sultanate maintains four aircraft at each of its airbases. The No3 squadron at Salalah has 16 Super Lynx 300 helicopters equipped for a variety of roles. The aircraft arrived in the country on 24 June 2004, just 28 months after signing the contract. The Sultanate has also ordered F-16 fighter jets from Boeing and Lockheed Martin.
The RAFO has five main bases: Seeb serves as the capital city, Muscat, and the Sultanate’s Flying Academy. Its other two major bases are Salalah and Thumrait, near the Yemen border. There are also smaller airfields in the south of the Sultanate. These four bases are home to RAFO aircraft, organized into twelve squadrons. The RAFO has more than one hundred operational squadrons.
In terms of aircraft, the RAFO has a large fleet of aircraft. It has twelve Hawk Mk 203 light ground/interceptor fighters and two lead-in fighter-trainers. The RAFO also has three squadrons: the Sultan Qaboos Flying Academy, Tumeric, and Muscat. During the 1990s, the Sultanate commissioned several American aircraft and has been the most popular.
