Military History of RAF Molesworth, Cambridgeshire United Kingdom
RAF Molesworth is an airbase in Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom. The base is located at Brington, 0.7 miles away. It is 10 miles north of Huntingdon. The village of Brington is a suburb of Molesworth. RAF headquarters is based at RAF Station Huntingdon. The village is a small rural community that hosts the RAF’s base. Located about 10 miles north of Huntingdon, Molesworth is home to many Air Force bases.
In 1942, RAF Molesworth was closed due to a lack of runway and had to rely on bunkers as a training base for jet aircraft. It was then returned to the RAF and became a care and maintenance base. This base is home to several units of transient aircraft, including the 1335 Conversion Unit. It was shut down on 10 October 1946. The airfield is closed and used for economy housing and a MAN KAT1 8×8 tractor.
During the interwar period, the airfield was abandoned. However, after the war, the Royal Flying Corps chose a site in Huntingdonshire near Old Weston. The Ministry of Defence chose the site in 1915, and the first flying unit arrived in September 1917. The base was reopened in 1992, and the RAF installed a new nuclear missile launch complex. The new base has a long and rich history, including the birth of a new aircraft model, the mighty Spitfire.
RAF Molesworth Experienced Civilian Defense Counsel
RAF Molesworth was a World War II airbase near the village of Old Weston. In the first year of operation, 75 Squadron remained at the airfield until September 1917. The base was located at 1.011 square miles and was the home to a peace camp in 1984-5. There are several buildings still in use at RAF Molesworth. The RAF is now closed, but many of them remain.
RAF Molesworth is a British military base that is the home of the 423rd Air Base Group. This base is located in a rural area, and the 423rd ABG provides support functions. While RAF Molesworth is home to foreign troops, it has no civilian workforce. In addition to the RAF, it also is home to the Joint Intelligence Operations Center Europe.
While RAF Molesworth was closed in 1973, the base was used as a training base for jet aircraft. It was a part of the Tri-base area, which included RAF Alconbury and RAF Upwood. The three bases were considered a “Tri-base” area due to their proximity to each other. Aside from the runway, there was a chapel and a heliport.
The location of RAF Molesworth in Cambridgeshire was a vital site for the 303rd Bomb Group. The 303rd was an early Eighth Air Force station in the UK. They moved into the base in September 1942, after the station was built. The 303rd remained at the base until June 1945. This was an important milestone in the history of the RAF in Cambridgeshire.
RAF Molesworth had a variety of uses. The airfield was a training facility and served as a housing center for military families in nearby stations. The base was home to a chapel for a Catholic and Protestant community and a synagogue in Peterborough. The RAF Alconbury Chapel held regular Protestant services. The town also has a veterinary clinic and a Class Six shop.
The RAF Molesworth airfield was established in 1951. The airfield was a prime location for a large number of wartime buildings. The main runway is a 1950s jet type. There are only two T.2 hangars here. During the Second World War, the airfield was home to a cluster of Nissen huts and crumbling buildings. The Ministry of Defence reconstructed the airfield in the 1980s, and it now consists of two T.2 hangars and a J-Type.
RAF Molesworth is one of the last RAF bases in the United Kingdom. The base is part of the “Tri-base area” and is also home to the 423rd Air Base Group and the Joint Intelligence Operations Center Europe Analytic Center. RAF Molesworth is located near the RAF Alconbury, Upwood, and Alconbury. This is why it’s an important base for the US Air Force.
