Founded in Afghanistan, it is an expeditionary fire base built by the United States Marine Corps. The location is south of Lashkar Gah along the Helmand River. It is found at Route 605 in Nawa-l-Barakzayi District of Helmand Province. Most residents here are southeast Afghans and northwest Pakistanis. This place is one of the top opium producing districts in Afghanistan with 6% of the country’s total crops being grown here. Fiddler’s Green was originally built by the 3rdBatallion, 11th Marines for Operation Strike of Sword.
It was a Taliban garrison until the summer of 2009, when the United States Marines deployed troops here as part of Operation Strike Sword. After capturing this, it became a US Marine Corps stronghold. Here is where the success story of Afghan President Hamid Karzai and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) commander General Stanley McChrystal took place after a fierce combat against the Taliban in 2010.
