A court-martial conviction may result in serious life-altering consequences. In addition to the punishment given by the court-martial, the accused can suffer from lifelong collateral consequences as a result of the conviction.
A General court-martial can sentence the accused to the following punishments:
- Dishonorable or Bad Conduct Discharge, Dismissal
- Jail time, up to life without the possibility of parole. Note: Death is authorized for some offenses.
- Reduction to E-1
- Restriction
- Extra duty
- Hard labor without confinement
- Forfeiture of all pay and allowances
- Reprimand
- Monetary fine
- No punishment
