Military History of Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany
The small German town of Spangdahlem is home to the Spangdahlem Air Base, a tenant of the USAF, and a NATO airbase. Located about thirty kilometers NE of Trier, the town is in the Rhineland-Palatinate region. The airbase was built between 1951 and 1953 and is now a NATO base.
After the 2005 war, the German and American forces transferred some of the base’s capacity. During the war, this allowed the Air Force to send reinforcements in a future conflict. The US Air Force calls this approach agile combat employment. The re-stationing decision will be made months in advance so that families can prepare accordingly. Even though Spangdahlem Air Base is a military installation, it is a community-based base, and the Airmen who will be moving there will not be facing any hardships.
As a result of the realignment, the 52nd Fighter Wing and 23rd Fighter Squadron were consolidated into one squadron. The 480th and 81st Fighter Squadrons, the last American-made A-10 units in Europe, will now operate from Mildenhall and Spangdahlem. In addition, a new headquarters for the base will be built, with more space and more F-16s.
The F-16 squadron was established in 1952, and it operated Douglas RB-26C Invaders. The squadron was given to prepare the facility for the operational wing. In April 2019, the 7352d AB was designated the operational wing, and its 7352d Air Base Squadron began operating RF-80s. The RB-26s and RF-80s were replaced with Martin RB-57A Canberras and Republic Aviation RF-84F Thunderjets.

While the 52d Fighter wing was not the worst-hit area, nearby villages were underwater because of floodwaters. While the re-location will not affect the base’s mission, it will leave the base more vulnerable. The resurfacing of the runway and the new RB-66s could cause a major disruption in the normal operation of the base. The resurfaced runway would likely be inaccessible to enemy bombers in a case like this.
The 52d Fighter Squadron was inactivated in 1995. In October 1994, the 480 Fighter Squadron was inactivated. However, in September 1995, the 606th Air Control Squadron remained in Bitburg. Afterward, the 53d Aircraft Squadron closed in the town of Bitburg. The 450-foot building that houses The USAF had repaired the 51st Tactical Flight Wing, and the surviving 480 Fighter Squadron transferred to the 52d Fighter Wing.
In October 1994, the 480 Fighter Squadron was inactivated. However, it remained operational for another three years. In September 1995, the 606th Air Control Squadron moved to Bitburg. In January 1996, the 53d Fighter Wing closed in Bitburg. In addition to the 480 Fighter Squadron, the base was home to the 480th Air Control Squadron.
In September 1973, the 39 TEWS was activated by Headquarters USAFE at Spangdahlem Air Base. The wing was originally a part of the German Army, but the French had taken control after the war and renamed it “Saber Nation.” The wing is spread out over nine sites in five countries and has 5,000 personnel. The total number of aircraft on duty is at the highest level of the modern era.
The 52d Fighter Wing is a unit of the 52nd Fighter Wing. Its mission is to support the operations of the 51st Air Wing. The 480th Fighter Squadron will move from Bitburg to Spangdahlem in October 1991. The 510th F-Wing was inactivated in February 1994. In October 1991, the unit was reorganized as the 52nd TFW. In January 1993, it added a fourth tactical unit. In November 1995, the 512th FW was transferred to Spangdahlem.
In July, Defense Secretary Mark Esper announced that nearly 12,000 US troops would be moving out of Germany. In the meantime, the 52nd Fighter Wing’s remaining fighter squadron would be moving to Aviano Air Base in Italy. The move will further reduce the size of the US military’s mission in Germany and elsewhere in the world. The Pentagon said the new plan is the best option to promote security and stability.
