Morón Air Base Spain – Military History

The Morón Air Base is located in La Mancha, Spain. It is the only base in Europe designated to host a NASA Space Shuttle Transoceanic Abort Landing site. The airbase is home to the Spanish Air Force’s Ala 11 Squadrons. It is equipped with special navigation aids to assist astronauts during the landing. A runway and specialized weather systems are required to accommodate the huge spacecraft.

In 1973, Morón Air Base was established. It was designated as a Combined Joint Operations Center. In 1976, the United States Air Forces in Europe signed a contract with Morn Air Base. The contract was renewed every four years. The base was staffed with 30 Det. 401 TFW personnel. In September 1976, the 401st Tactical Fighter Wing was deployed to Spain to support operations in Europe.

After the agreement was made between the US and the Spanish government, Morón Air Base Spain was permanently designated as a US military base. After the initial operations, the US contingent was assigned to Torrejon’s different location. However, the new facility was not activated until 1992. Its purpose was to host US troops. A total of 800 US personnel will be stationed at the base.

The 401st TFW was reassigned to the 660th Generation Squadron. They have performed several exercises and conducted some missions with Spanish and MAC. In addition to this, their units are also responsible for training exercises with other airbases. While most of the flight activities of Morn Air Base Spain are restricted to emergency operations, the 625th MARS Squadron will be a major terminal for MAC’s transatlantic flights.
