Marine Aviation Training Support Group 53, North Carolina

Marine Corps Court Martial Lawyers

The Marine Aviation Training Support Group was commissioned at the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in North Carolina as one of the earliest Marine night-fighter group during the World War II. As the war went on, the group was also made responsible for all the necessary training required of the VFM(N) squadrons. During the course of the WWII, they were able to produce eight high-quality night-fighting squadrons – all but one of these squadrons were sent to combat.

The group went through several changes in their name. For instance, they were re-designated as Marine Night Fighter Group 53 or MNFG 53 in April of 1945. In February of 1946, they once again changed their name, this time to Marine Aircraft Group 53 or MAG-53 when they transferred back to MCAS Cherry Point.
