Military History of the US Air Force Bases in Germany

The Büchel Air Base is a joint US-German military base located in Buechel, Germany. The US and German military use the base to train and equip its fighter and bomber pilots. Approximately 124 men and women work here. The Büchel AFB is known for its nuclear weapons. The 702 Munition Support Squadron is responsible for maintaining the nation’s B61 nuclear missiles. The airfield is 45 miles from Spangdahlem Air Force Base.

The French military used the base to train and equip the allied forces. The United States Air Force Enterprise (USAFE) had 22 wings in Central Europe. The wing commander was based in a glassed-in office on the third floor of a three-story underground command center. In 1953, the USAFE took over the site. On 15 August 1954, the center was open to the public. It was the largest US air force installation in Europe.

The French delegation visited the 52nd Munitions Maintenance Group and the 480th Fighter Squadron. They toured the world-class simulator facility, where they learned how to deal with peer threats. They also visited Club Eifel and the 86th Fighter Squadron. They got a firsthand view of how the GSU maintained the US weapons in its strike missions. The France delegation was impressed with how well the base was prepared to defend its allied allies.

The ANG 152d Tactical Control Group used mobile ground radar and radio equipment. About 1,850 airmen and officers were stationed at the base. In 1985, the ANG resurfaced the runway at Spang and transferred the 76th Airlift Squadron to Bitburg. The 86th Contingency Response Group brought the airfield operations mission to the 86th Airlift Wing. Aside from the 52nd TFW, the 76th Airlift Squadron and the 75th Airlift Squadron transferred to Ramstein.

In 1948, the United States and its allies deployed aircraft to Bavaria, trained and provided training. The B-29 was the most important aircraft used during World War II and was a vital tool for the US during the Cold War. The 26th TRW was reassigned to Zweibrucken in July 2009 to support the UNAM in Darfur. The United States later reactivated the airfield after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Besides the 702 MUNSS, the Büchel Air Base is also the only fully-operating air base in Germany for the US and the French. The US Air Force also maintains a presence at the Büchel AAF and the 700th MUNSS at Spangdahlem. This is a major military base in the country and is located 70 km from Cochem. In 2007, the US army took over the operation of the former Luftwaffe.

During World War II, the European Air Materiel Command (EAM) was headquartered at RAF Burtonwood and Oberpfaffenhofen. In November 1946, the B-29s were sent to bases along the Black Sea, including Turkey and Greece. In May 1947, the EMS moved to the Erlangen Air Depot. In April 1949, the B-29s were reassigned to the USSTAF and renamed “European Air Force Service Command.”

The Büchel Air Base Germany is the only location in Germany to have nuclear weapons. The US and the German military are based at the same location. The MMFA HQ is in Strasbourg, France. The 435th AMP (Air Mobility and Expeditionary Forces) focuses on base-support responsibilities. It operates from four bases in Europe and is the host unit of the Ramstein Airshow. The four groups in the MMSA are composed of 30 aircraft and commanded by Brigadier General Joshua Olson.

The Büchel Air Base Germany has an important role in military aviation. The US military has operated in Germany since 1945. The airbase was established in 1951 and opened on 5 August 1952. The 86th Fighter-Bomber Wing and associated flying units arrived at Büchel Airbase Germany on 1 February 1952. The facility also has a control tower and ramps. The main building of the airport is called “Landstuhl.”

Aside from nuclear weapons, the base also hosts other military equipment. The Air Force is assigned about 20 B61 nuclear bombs. The base has two dozen hangars. It is located 30 kilometers north of the city of Trier. The US has deployed these bombs in the European Union and NATO. The Büchel airbase also has a lot of underground vaults. The American nuclear bombs are stored here. During wartime, the Büchel Air Base Germany is one of the five countries in the world that hosts these weapons.
