The city of Memphis lies in the southwest corner of the state of Tennessee, in the Shelby County. The city lies on the bank of River Mississippi and it is the third largest city on the river. Memphis came into existence in 1819, when it was founded by a group of businessmen including Andrew Jackson, who became the president of the United States in the future days. Military Presence in Memphis
Memphis houses the Air National Guard Base, which is the home base of the Tennessee Air National Guard 164th Airlift Wing. The main responsibility of the 164th is providing quality force in order to achieve airlift, aerial delivery and mobility missions which support the United States besides responding to the needs of the State. Initially, the 164th Airlift Wing became activate from 23 December 1946 as the 155th Fighter Squadron. The aircraft assigned to them was the F-51 Fighter. Later, the unit received re-designation as a Tactical Reconnaissance squadron. Currently, the machines used by the Air National Guard are C-17As. The Memphis Naval Air Station, Millington, is the world’s largest inland naval base and dates back to World War I.
NSA Mid-South has around 7,000 enlisted personnel and officers, besides civilians as well as full-time contract personnel. The entire NSA complex, including the unpaved satellite fields within a fifteen-mile radius, covers an area of more than 3,500 acres. A section of the Navy Region Midwest and the Navy Installations Command, NSA Mid-South is in service as the Human Resources Center of Excellence of the US Navy. NAS Memphis was given the designation as the Naval Support Activity Memphis in September 30, 1995. It was again rechristened to Naval Support Activity Mid-South on October 1, 1998, so that it could be closely identified regarding the mission requirements of the base and the approach of the US Navy’s for regionalization can be reflected.
