Militarydefenseattorneys263In 1778, General Adam Stephen established a settlement on the banks of the Potomac River. This territory will later become known as the city of Martinsburg, which was named after Colonel Thomas Martin, a nephew of the Lord Fairfax. The first railroad that reached the city was the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, built in 1842. It was after that event that the city of Martinsburg became one of the biggest centers of the railroad industry. As a result, its population grew, and so did the other industries. During World War II, Martinsburg provided the wounded soldier with treatment in one of the newly-established facilities. That building still serves the same function, even after all those years. The city experienced a setback during the 1950’s, when many companies shut down and many people were left unemployed.

Industry

The city of Martinsburg used to be a major railroad center, as well as the site of many manufacturing companies. That all changed during the 1940’s and the 1950’s, after most of the factories and mills had been shut down. As a result, many people were out of jobs, and the local economy suffered like never before. Nowadays Martinsburg doesn’t have a highly developed industry, but things are changing for the better. The military presence has helped boost the economy, especially the Shepherd Field Air National Guard Base.
