Diego Garcia is a naval air facility under the British Indian Ocean Territory that is operated by the United States Navy located in the central Indian Ocean. The camp’s long history goes back to the periods between 1968 and 1973 when Chagossianswere thrown out by the British government eventually allowing the United States to install a military base.
The atoll sits in the Chagos Archipelago surrounded by the African coast in the east, Kanyakumari, India in the southwest part and the Australian west coast in the northwest region. It is also in close proximity to the tip of the Chagos-Laccadive Ridge, the southern part where a massive submarine range, chain of coral reefs and other islands such as the Maldives are found. As an established large naval facility, Diego Garcia is known as the support base for submarines and military including communication support, space tracking and as an anchorage for the Military Sealift Command whenever military supplies are needed for operations within the region.
