Tomah WiThe city of Tomah is located in Monroe County, in the state of Wisconsin. According to the latest US Census, which was conducted in 2011, the city has a population of just over 9,000 people. Since it is a relatively small town with no large or developed industry, Tomah is a peaceful place that is also great for raising a family. There are no famous tourist attractions here, but there are still plenty of things to do. Apart from going out and dining in one of the charming local restaurants, you can always go check out the Tomah Sparta Raceway. It is a modern and well-equipped racetrack with plenty of seats with a great view.

Geography

A part of the city of Tomah is located in the Town of Tomah. It occupies a total of 7.86 square miles, 7.46 square miles of which is land, and 0.4 square miles is covered in water. According to the census that was conducted in 2000, the city of Tomah has over 3,400 individual households, around 2,000 of which are located within the city grounds. The majority of the inhabitants are Caucasian, making up around 94% of the population, while the remaining 6% is made up of African Americans, Native Americans, Asians and Pacific Islanders. When it comes to weather, the city of Tomah falls under the category of continental climates. This means that it has warm summers with little rainfall, and cold winters with plenty of snowfall.

History

The city of Tomah was established in 1855 by Robert Gillette, but named after the second son of a trader that lived with the Menominee tribe. The members of the tribe pronounced the name Thomas as Tomau, which is why the city eventually became known as Tomah. The city of Tomah has had an uneventful history, which is fortunate for its inhabitants. It hasn’t developed much during the 20th and the early 21st century, and its industry and trade have remained almost non-existent. The city was, however, revitalized after the building of the Fort McCoy military base, which has greatly influenced its economy. It is now a peaceful small town with less than 10,000 inhabitants.

Industry

Military Presence

Fort McCoy is a US Army military installation that occupies a total of 60,000 acres of land. It is situated near the city of Tomah in Monroe County of the state of Wisconsin. It is also near the city of Sparta. It was established in 1909, which makes it one of the oldest of its kind. At first, it was used as a military training center. Although that remains its main mission, it is also home to the training facilities of the Wisconsin State Patrol. The base was named after Major General Bruce McCoy, the man who first made the suggestion of building the base on its current site. Fort McCoy experienced a major expansion during the 1930’s, which was a part of the preparation for the then upcoming World War II.
