Kunsan K-8 US Air Force Base, Republic of Korea
The Kunsan K-8 Air Base is situated about 180 km south of Seoul in South Korea. It is part of the United States Air Force and is located in the town of Gunsan, along the west coast of the peninsula. The base borders the Yellow Sea. Visitors to the US Air Force base can see many different kinds of aircraft and other aircraft parts. In addition, the base has a museum for visitors to view.
The training at Kunsan AB is intensive, with aircraft executing up to 130 sorties per day. It also tested the base’s ability to operate in a high-operations-tempo environment, accept follow-on forces, and generate airpower quickly. In addition, the exercises focused on air-to-ground operations and the ability to operate alongside dissimilar aircraft effectively. The exercise lasted about two weeks and involved the deployment of F-86 fighters from the 318th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron from McChord AFB in Washington.
The 3d Tactical Fighter Wing arrived at Kunsan in May 1971 and replaced the 36th Tactical Fighter Squadron. The wing initially included the 35th and 36th Tactical Fighter Squadrons stationed at Kunsan in the early 1950s. The 3d Tactical Flight Wing later assumed control of the base in March 1971. A few days later, the 36th Tactical Jet Squadron departed from the base, and the 80th Tactical Fighting Squadron took their place.
After the war, the 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing first arrived at Kunsan. This unit flew F-4 Phantoms. The 35th and 36th Tactical Fighter Squadrons were later replaced by the 80th and 89th Tactical Fighter Squadrons. The 3rd Tactical Wing had been previously known as the 3rd Bombardment Wing and had been stationed at Kunsan in the early 1950s. In March 1971, the wing assumed control of the base.
In July 1968, the 354th Tactical Fighter Wing arrived at Kunsan. In 1969, they began their transition to the F-4 Phantom. They remained at Kunsan until June 1970. During this time, the 34th Tactical Fighter Wing was again stationed at Kunsan. It consists of the Kansas Air National Guard and DC-ANG and flies the F-100 Super Sabre.
The installation is located 150 miles south of Seoul. The city of Gunsan is a port town 7.5 miles from the base. The AB is named after the town. The area offers many historical landmarks and temples and many interesting sites. It is a great place to live! You can enjoy your time at Kunsan AB while working or traveling. This South Korean Air Force installation is located in the western part of the peninsula.
After the war, the US Army shifted its responsibilities to other regional bases. After the war, the US military turned over the base to the Republic of Korea Air Force. In August 1951, the 3d Bombardment Wing departed Kunsan Air Base, and the 474th Fighter-Bomber Group joined it. The US military used the base for various types of combat. The unit’s main role was to destroy airfields. In addition, it was responsible for bombing the bridges and troops.
After the war, the US military began withdrawing its combat units from Korea. The only remaining unit at Kunsan was the Military Assistance Advisory Group. During the Korean War, the US still maintained a presence at the base, but fewer American soldiers and their families lived in the area. As a result, they were able to continue training at the base. And, after the war, the Air Force reorganized the base into the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing. The eighth Tactical Fighter Wing was reunited with its original two flying squadrons.
The 841st Engineering Aviation Battalions constructed the main runway at Kunsan in 1954. The 4th Tactical Fighter Wing left Kunsan in October of 1953 and was replaced by the 354th TFW. During the war, the 354th TFW was assigned to Kunsan. After the end of the war, the base’s mission was to serve the USFK’s contingency operations and the air force’s MILCON program.
